This is why you should use a menstrual cup

Thinking about starting to use a menstrual cup? Not sure about the benefits? There are many reasons to switch from pads and tampons to a menstrual cup. Here are some of them.

It’s safe and good for your vaginal health

The menstrual cup is safe to use. A study published in The Lancet looked at data from 3300 women who used a menstrual cup and found that the product is safe to use. It also found that 73% wanted to continue using the product, that vaginal infections were reduced in many cases and that the product does not affect the pH balance of the vagina.

Unlike tampons, a menstrual cup is not designed to absorb your period, but instead collects the period in the cup. Together with an unaffected pH balance, this drastically reduces the risk of irritation and dry mucous membranes. A menstrual cup made of medical silicone is free of toxins, easy to clean and therefore also easy to keep free of bacteria.

The midwife Caroline Jivenius is one of those who have looked more closely at the use of a menstrual cup. In her master's thesis "It's a Fucking Revolution: Women's reasons for and experiences of using a menstrual cup", she says that the most obvious change for women is their perception of better vaginal health.

Kind to your wallet

If you take good care of your menstrual cup, it can last for years. In other words, you won't have to buy a new one very often, and you won't have to buy tampons and pads every month. How much money will you save by not having to buy pads and tampons in years?

Environmentally friendly

It is not only your economy that is affected by choosing a menstrual cup instead of disposables. The environment is also better off! It takes a lot of resources to produce pads and tampons. And think about how many disposable products you use during one period, not to mention all the years you have your period. Studies show that a person consumes around 11,000 pads and tampons in their lifetime. In other words, by choosing a menstrual cup for your period, you are also saving the environment.

It's easy to use

A menstrual cup holds much more blood than a tampon or pad. Depending on the capacity of the cup and how much you bleed, you can use the cup for up to 12 hours at a time. In other words, you don't need to empty the cup as often as you need to change a pad or tampon.

With a menstrual cup, you don't have to carry multiple products in your bag. You don't have to worry about whether or not there is a bin in the toilet because you can easily empty the product and only need to rinse it off to use it again.

You can exercise with the product just like with pads and tampons, but unlike those, you can also bathe with a menstrual cup without worrying because it doesn't absorb any water.
